City Arcade Mural

Now displayed inside Dundee Museum of Transport, this mural was originally at Hynd Brothers Amusements in the City Arcade, beneath Caird Hall. Info from DMofT: "The mural is believed to date from the early 1960s, before the building of the Tay Road Bridge. It shows an artist’s impression of the future for Dundee’s transport, including the bridge which would open in 1966. Along with a return to travel on horseback, the artist foresaw aerial rocket powered transportation - at a time before man had reached the moon. City Arcade flourished whilst Dundee’s buses ran from nearby Shore Terrace, but after the bus station moved it fell into decline and finally closed. The submarine shown to the left of the envisaged road bridge is at the location of rocks that can be seen protruding from the water still today as you travel across the bridge to Fife, and that were known locally as ‘the submarine’ due to their shape."
