Description

Commssioned by Hillcrest Homes for the Ellengowan housing development.

Info from Collective Architecture: "Collective Architecture and Hillcrest Homes have worked closely with the community throughout the design process. A new public art-work has been created by Dundee Designer, Kirsty Thomas from Tom Pigeon. Kirsty held a drop in community workshop in 2019, where local residents shared their thoughts and memories for the new community, which will feed into this exciting creative commission."

Info from Brick Development Association: "Glazed bricks were used to create unique feature artworks at every front door. This abstract artwork, which was designed by Tom Pigeon, provides strong, distinct, attractive frontages to the pedestrian-friendly streets. It also establishes a strong sense of identity and community pride - each image reflects the botanical and industrial history of the site. The specific colours chosen were selected to complement the brick tone and provide distinction between blocks."

Info from Tom Pigeon: "I had the amazing privilege to collaborate with Collective Architecture and the residents of the Ellengowan estate in Dundee to create a public art project for the redevelopment of this historic community. Working with locals to uncover the visual language of the area, its history of jute making, and its connection to the River Tay, I developed a series of decorative bricks which now form part of every doorway. Colours act as wayfinding markers and each doorway is now a tactile permanent piece of art that people can hopefully engage with each day."
