Unicorn on the Mercat Cross

Sutherland initially offered to repair the original unicorn on the mercat cross for £400 in 1970, but said he would be unable to make a new one due to poor health. Although initial estimates were much higher, he eventually made the new one in 1971 for £575. At the same time the stonework on the cross was dressed down and the finish restored. The original medieval unicorn from the mercat cross (erected by John Mylne in 1586 to replace an earlier structure) is now in the McManus.
