Description

In park at Whitfield Loan. Dundee Public Art Programme, funded by Dundee City Council (cost £11,000). Made of cement and ceramics. Bird consulted local people for ideas about how to represent the regeneration of the area. Workshops were held with community education worker Billy Gartley to decide on the design, and local children came up with the idea of a 'Mr White' on a horse, making it Dundee's only equestrian statue. The hand-painted ceramic tiles represent the development of Whitfield from farmland to one of Dundee’s biggest housing estates and many of the issues and problems that housing areas have when they are built on the outskirts of a city such as transport and access to facilities. The work was cast at the Scottish Sculpture Workshop in Lumsden and installed outside Whitfield Activity Complex in 1998, moving to Whitfield Loan in 2016. New stone tiles that have engraved drawings, again by local children, were installed around the base of the sculpture by Carol Arnott.
