Description
Commissioned by Dundee City Council and Unicorn Property Group through the % for Art scheme. Installed on the site of the slipway where the Discovery was built. The interior negative forms are based on the sections of the Discovery. The artist was inspired by the story of the Discovery getting trapped in the ice. The granite (from Portugal) was chosen to be as pale and ice-like as possible (sparkles like ice). It arrived as one 27-tonne block and was cut into 11 slabs at Fyfe Glenrock in Aberdeenshire then sculpted by the artist. Dundee Heritage Trust allowed access to the Discovery’s plans.
