Pyramid and canopies above former public toilets

The final commission from the Blackness Public Art Programme to be completed – delayed because of the time taken to renovate the underground toilets (to which ladies toilets were added for the first time, at the artist’s suggestion). The tree-like canopies were completed in 1985, and the pyramid covering the toilet skylight followed in 1986. Made of glass-reinforced plastic, it features four symbols – a tree on the north side to face the Sidlaws, a cross on the east to face the City Churches, a salmon on the south to face the Tay and a Roman W on the west. The stone walls around the canopies were removed when the toilets closed. Cost £11,000.
