Napier (silk screen print of car on tile panel)

Only one of four remaining. Info from artist: I was commissioned to produce a series of 'on glaze' fired ceramic murals for the Blackness Public Art Programme. The Scottish Development Agency was one of the funders and also the Scottish Arts Council. The company which occupied the building at the time was called Tay Valley Coaches, a long established bus/transport company which was set up early in the 20th Century. I think the Napier vehicle was one of the very early 'Taxis' owned by Tay Valley Coaches. The project was much bigger initially as I made four 8ft x 4ft murals using a photo silkscreen printing process and then hand tinting the printed images before they were fired in an electric kiln in the Duncan of Jordanstone School of Art. There was also a smaller panel made with the bus company logo painted on it: incorporating the letters TVC. However when the building was sold around the late 1980s three of the big murals were destroyed/removed as the new owner wanted to create more window space [for a car showroom]. I also worked with children in St Joseph’s primary school to make twenty or more illustrated tiles with images on the theme of transport - print/painted by the school kids. These were originally intended to be installed as a horizontal strip of tiles about 2ft above pavement level, underneath the big murals. Sadly the owner of the building at the time changed his mind and didn't want the kids’ tiles. I then proposed to the Blackness management team that a new stone seat could be created at the end of Bellfield Street and that the tiles be integrated with it. However this never happened as far as I know and sadly I never found out what happened to the children's tiles.”
