The Tay (stained glass)

Dundee Public Art Programme. Funded by Bank of Scotland; cost £11,000. Unveiled January 1997. Took 6 months to make and uses a metal structure made by P Johnson & Co. It is in 12 sections with a total height of around 10 metres. According to The Courier 3/1/97: “The basis of life – water and the river – provided the inspiration for the glass, which also bears the names of dozens of livelihoods, ancient and modern, that have given Dundee its prosperity. One spiral runs up the building, the other comes down to meet it halfway. The names of the professions – such as merchant, maltman, hacklemaker and apothecary – run upwards. Those involved in whaling, shipbuilding and textiles are featured too, as are education and journalism, and modern occupations including computing, electronics and the traffic warden. On top of the spiral, appropriately enough for its location, is banker.”
