Ceramic pillars

At the entrance to the main concourse, Ninewells Hospital. Commissioned by Dundee Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust through Health Care Arts with additional funding from Scottish Arts Council, University of Dundee and Nine Incorporated Trades. Info from the artist: “A series of ten ceramic relief panels initiated and managed by Health Care Arts working with Crafts in Scottish Hospitals. At first Local Guilds was to be the theme. However my submission of a young man walking in wheat fields with his dog and a cake was not considered to reflect the right image for The Bakers Guild.So the subject was changed to panels illustrating local themes such as woman weavers in the mills, sports and arts and science and local wild life etc. Among the roundel designs at the top of each panel are representations of mediaeval seals for Dundee. The design fees were sponsored by the Scottish Arts Council, the commision budget was funded by Ninewells Hospital and Medical School. I had a studio space in The Adam Pottery in Edinburgh at the time. I hired studio space in Dundee and the work was fired in the ceramics department of the Dundee Art College. The material used is Craft Crank, reduction fired, to stoneware temperature.”
